Anyone who merely associates the word ‘milk’ with the typical litre packs in the fridge fails to appreciate this multifunctional product. In addition to well-known dairy products such as yoghurt, custard and cheese and all their different varieties, milk has numerous other uses.

 

Valuable ingredients

Milk is a source of valuable ingredients that we wish to put to the best possible use. Whey, formerly considered an undesirable by-product, actually deserves a chapter of its own. Its applications are practically unlimited. For instance, baby food enriched with whey proteins is the next best thing to mother’s milk. Ingredients obtained from whey form indispensable components for the food industry. Lactose (milk sugar), for instance, is often used as a filler in soups, sauces and snacks. But lactose is also an important substance for the pharmaceutical industry, used, for instance, in asthma medication.

Who would have thought all that was contained in a simple pack of milk?
